From Black and White to Brilliant - Lecture
I will be teaching “Designing with Storm at Sea and Snail’s Trail Blocks” in Session 5.
In this class you will explore TRIMplate® piecing using my rulers to make accurate blocks with a simple trim-after-you-sew technique. I will have lessons on how to effectively use these versatile, traditional blocks to achieve many different design variations. Design your own, or use one of my patterns for your class project(s). Suitable for beginners as well as advanced quilters.
Learn how to turn old fashioned “Snail’s Trail” blocks into a splashy ocean wave border. But these blocks are not pieced the old-fashioned way! Make accurate blocks every time with Wendy’s trim-after-you-sew TRIMplate ruler. No templates. No paper-piecing. No bias on the block edges. Just easy sewing and trimming. Skill level: Beginners who are confident with a rotary cutter.
On day 2 we will work on appliqué of the sea turtle, seaweed and kelp. You have plenty of creative options here!
Honu is my interpretation of “The Protector”, a pattern by Barbara Bieraugel.
This is a 2-day class. Day 1 will cover Storm at Sea piecing using my TRIMplates, or you can choose to paper piece using papers provided in the pattern.
This delightful wreath wall-hanging may look complicated, but Wendy has a whole system for cutting each piece easily from large half-square triangles. It’s like a mystery quilt because you just follow step-by-step and it all comes together magically in the end. Make one for autumn, Christmas, or spring – from one fabric or several. Beginner-friendly.
Flying Geese Binder Cover
Are you ready for a “NO-FAIL” flying geese piecing method? You’ll learn all about piecing these versatile quilt blocks as you make a handy binder cover. You’ll receive Wendy’s free pattern in class. These binder covers make great gifts!

Wendy’s Quilt-as-you-go Table Topper
These Table Toppers make great gifts, and they require only basic sewing skills – no quilting required! When your 6 panels are sewn “quilt as you go” style, they are all ready to be joined together. Kits will be available at Quilt Passions, or you can bring your own fabric.
Geese in the Lillies, pattern by Debbie Maddy (2 session class)
Make a stunning quilt in your choice of sizes from Lap to King. In this 2-session class, Wendy will teach her “No-fail Flying Geese” method and a machine-sewn alternative to fused appliqué. Follow Debbie Maddy’s pattern for yardage, design and layout and Wendy will guide you through each step. Second class is piecing and appliqué of the flower blocks.

This makes a beautiful baby quilt, and it’s so much fun to make! Designed by Wendy Mathson, it’s called “Sawdust Trail”. Layer cake-friendly, or use fat quarters or scraps. Good for beginners!
